A Family-Run Alternative to the Big Flooring Chains
Smallwood Flooring was started in 2016 by William Smallwood, and it's still run the same way today — one crew, one owner who shows up on the jobs, and a focus on getting your floor right the first time. We're not a warehouse with a showroom full of samples; we come to you.
If you've been comparing quotes from the big national chains, you've probably noticed the sales pitch is heavy on selection and light on who's actually doing the work. We'd rather talk about your subfloor, your foundation type, and what will hold up in your specific house.

Solid or Engineered: We'll Walk You Through Both
Not every home in Charlotte calls for the same kind of hardwood. Solid wood flooring is the traditional choice — it can be sanded and refinished many times over the decades, which makes it a natural fit for older homes with crawlspace or pier-and-beam foundations. If that describes your house, take a look at our solid hardwood flooring page.
Engineered hardwood is built in layers, which makes it far more stable when humidity swings or when it's going over a concrete slab — common in a lot of the newer subdivisions going up around Charlotte. You can read more on our engineered hardwood page if that sounds like your situation.
- Solid hardwood: best over crawlspaces, refinishable for decades
- Engineered hardwood: stable over slab foundations, handles humidity swings
- Both available in a range of stains and finishes

Built With Charlotte's Climate and Housing Stock in Mind
Summers here get hot and humid, and that matters more for wood floors than people expect. Wood expands and contracts with moisture, so the wrong product in the wrong spot can cup, gap, or buckle a few years down the road. We factor humidity and foundation type into every recommendation instead of just selling whatever's in stock.
We also do a fair amount of work in the older brick ranch neighborhoods around Charlotte, where there's often original hardwood hiding under carpet that's been down for decades. Sometimes the better, less expensive answer is refinishing what's already there instead of ripping it out — we'll tell you honestly if that's the case.

How We Handle a Hardwood Project
We start with a free in-home estimate, by appointment — William or a member of our crew comes out, looks at your subfloor and foundation, measures the space, and talks through species, plank width, and finish options with you in person.
From there we handle subfloor prep, installation, and cleanup, and we walk the finished floor with you before we call the job done. Questions during the process go straight to the person doing the work, not a call center.

What Hardwood Flooring Costs in Charlotte
Every house is different, so these are general ranges. Your actual price depends on species, plank width, subfloor condition, and how much prep the space needs — we'll give you an exact number after we've seen the room.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engineered Hardwood, Installed | $6 – $11 per sq. ft. | Materials and labor |
| Solid Hardwood, Installed | $8 – $14 per sq. ft. | Varies by species and grade |
| Subfloor Repair or Prep | Quoted on site | Only if needed |
Ask about current openings on our install schedule when you call (980) 440-3523.
Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions
No — we don't run a retail showroom. We bring samples to your home during the free estimate so you can see how different woods and finishes actually look in your lighting, against your walls and trim.
It depends on your foundation. Homes with a crawlspace or basement generally do well with solid hardwood, while homes built on a concrete slab — common in newer Charlotte subdivisions — are usually better served by engineered hardwood. We'll tell you which makes sense once we've seen your subfloor.
A single room is often finished in a day or two once the subfloor is ready; whole-house projects take longer depending on square footage and whether we're removing old flooring first. We'll give you a realistic timeline at your estimate.
Often, yes, especially with solid hardwood that we can sand and stain to blend with existing floors. Bring photos or a sample board to your estimate and we'll do our best to get a close match.
