Hello, neighbor

Old Floor Removal & Subfloor Prep Done Right

Tear-out, haul-away, and subfloor leveling - the prep work that makes every new floor in Charlotte look (and stay) perfectly flat.

Getting Down to a Clean, Solid Base

A new floor is only as good as what it's installed on. Before Smallwood Flooring lays hardwood, carpet, or LVP, we remove what's there now and get the subfloor into shape — leveling, checking for moisture, and fixing squeaks or soft spots that would otherwise telegraph through the new flooring.

This is the part of a flooring job homeowners rarely think about until something goes wrong, and it's where William spends a lot of his attention. Skipping proper prep is how a brand-new floor ends up with the same creaks and dips as the one it replaced.

What's Included

We tear out and haul away existing flooring — old carpet and pad, worn hardwood, or vinyl — and remove the debris from your home. From there we address the subfloor itself: securing loose boards, leveling low spots, and installing new underlayment where it's needed.

  • Removal of existing flooring and padding
  • Debris haul-away included
  • Subfloor leveling and squeak repair
  • Moisture check before new flooring goes down
  • New underlayment installed where needed
What's Included

Crawlspace, Slab, and Everything In Between

Charlotte has a real mix of housing stock — older homes on crawlspaces where moisture and wood subfloors are the main concern, and newer construction on concrete slab where leveling compound and proper underlayment matter more. We treat these differently rather than using a one-size-fits-all prep process.

If we find damage during tear-out that goes beyond standard prep — a rotted subfloor section, for example — we'll walk you through it before moving forward rather than surprising you with it after the fact. In some cases that overlaps with our floor repair work.

Floor Demolition & Prep - frequently asked questions

Not necessarily for the whole day, but we do like to walk the space with you beforehand and connect if we find anything unexpected once old flooring comes up.

Tear-out is dusty work. We seal off the work area and haul debris out as we go, but if you have sensitive belongings nearby, it's worth mentioning during your estimate so we can plan around them.

Sometimes it's bundled into the overall installation quote and sometimes it's its own line item, depending on the condition of what's being removed. We'll spell that out clearly during your free in-home estimate.

We stop and talk to you before proceeding. Most of the time it's a minor leveling or moisture issue we handle as part of standard prep, but if it's something bigger, you'll hear about it from us directly, not find out after the new floor is already down.

Because you'll actually talk to the people doing the work. Smallwood Flooring is a small, owner-led company, so when we're in your home, we already know your project inside and out — no call centers, no handoffs, no pressure to upgrade to something you didn't ask for.
We treat every estimate and install like we're working in our own home — showing up when we say we will, communicating clearly about timeline and cost, and cleaning up the job site before we leave. If something isn't right afterward, we come back and fix it.
We focus on three categories so we can do them well: hardwood (including engineered hardwood and refinishing existing floors), carpet, and luxury vinyl plank. Staying focused lets us give honest advice instead of pushing whatever happens to be on sale.
Yes. Every installation we complete is backed by our own workmanship warranty, on top of whatever manufacturer's warranty comes with the materials you choose. If an issue shows up after the fact, give us a call and we'll take care of it.
We're based in Charlotte and work throughout the surrounding area, including Huntersville, Concord, Matthews, and other nearby communities. Not sure if your home falls in range? Just reach out and we'll let you know.
