A Real Wood Floor Built to Handle Movement
Engineered hardwood has a genuine hardwood wear layer on top, bonded over several layers of plywood or high-density core underneath. That layered construction is the whole point — it makes the plank far more resistant to expanding and contracting than a solid board, without giving up the look of real wood.
For a lot of the homes we work on around Charlotte, that stability is exactly what's needed.

A Good Match for Charlotte's New-Construction Subdivisions
So many of the newer neighborhoods going up around Charlotte are built on concrete slabs rather than crawlspaces, and solid hardwood generally isn't a good match for that kind of foundation. Engineered hardwood is designed to be installed directly over concrete, which makes it the more practical choice for these homes.
We also see a lot of relocation buyers moving into Charlotte for banking and finance jobs, closing on a newer build, and wanting to swap out builder-grade flooring fairly quickly after move-in. Engineered hardwood tends to be the right fit for exactly that kind of house.
- Installs directly over concrete slab foundations
- More resistant to humidity swings than solid wood
- Real wood wear layer — not a printed surface

Standing Up to Charlotte Humidity
Piedmont summers bring long stretches of heat and humidity, and that's usually where wood flooring runs into trouble — swelling, gapping, or cupping if it wasn't the right product for the space. Engineered hardwood's layered core is built to resist that seasonal movement better than solid wood, which is a big part of why we recommend it so often here.

What Goes Into the Installation
We check moisture levels in your subfloor or slab before we ever start installing — skipping that step is how floors fail early. From there, engineered hardwood can typically be nailed, glued, or floated depending on your subfloor, and we'll recommend the method that fits your home during the estimate.
If you're not sure whether engineered or solid hardwood is the better call for your specific house, our hardwood flooring page breaks down the difference, or just ask us directly when you call (980) 440-3523.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions
Yes. The top layer is genuine hardwood — it can even be lightly refinished once or twice depending on the wear-layer thickness. What's different is what's underneath, which is what gives it the added stability.
That's one of its main advantages. It's built to be installed directly over concrete, which makes it a much better option than solid hardwood for slab-built homes, common in a lot of newer Charlotte subdivisions.
Better than solid wood does. The layered core resists the expanding and contracting that humid summers can cause, though we'd still recommend keeping indoor humidity reasonably steady with your HVAC system.
Solid hardwood is one piece of wood all the way through and can be refinished many times, but it's more sensitive to moisture and foundation type. Engineered hardwood trades some of that refinishing life for a lot more stability, especially over concrete.
